Jamie’s 2800 length challenge for men living with cancer

When Jamie decided to take on a swimming challenge to raise money for CHFT Charity, he knew it wouldn’t be easy, but he also knew it would be worth it.

Over the course of 31 days, Jamie committed himself to swimming an amazing 2,800 lengths of a swimming pool. That meant pushing through 93 lengths every single day, no matter how he felt. It was a gruelling physical and mental task. By day 18, the exhaustion had caught up with him. Jamie said: “My body was battered, and I hadn’t slept the night before. Halfway through my swim this day, I paused in the water and asked myself ‘why am I doing this?’.

“But then I remembered, the pain I’m feeling is temporary, I can stop, recover and move on. For men living with cancer, the pain and fear often linger much longer. This realisation gave me the strength to keep going. I completed this swim with the knowledge that my efforts were going to something truly meaningful.”

Jamie raised a massive £4574.26 which will be going directly to support the Men’s Cancer Support Group run by CHFT’s Cancer Services Nicola Greaves, Macmillan Cancer Information Manager. These groups, funded by CHFT Charity, provide a vital space for men across Calderdale and Huddersfield who are living with cancer. These sessions offer connection, courage and understanding. One man in the group powerfully summed it up when he said: “The group gives me the courage to fight for my life.”

Jamie’s fundraising efforts are not just about swimming a set distance, it was about providing a lifeline for people who need it most. Jamie’s fundraising money will help men come to terms with their diagnosis, share their stories and find strength in the community over refreshments.

Jamie’s story is a reminder of how much one person can achieve. His lengths in the pool now echo far beyond the water, reaching into the lives of those who need support, showing them that they are not alone.

Everyone at CHFT and CHFT Charity would like to say a huge thank you to Jamie for being so amazing and supporting our Cancer Services. You are truly an inspiration!
